Item Processing Software
Back-End Check Imaging System - A process whereby the checks are turned into digital images and stored in an image database. This process allows for the exchange of check images with other banking institutions and check clearing houses.
bank capture - Usually refers to method of check processing whereby check micr data is read or the check is imaged for balancing.
bank imaging - Refers to the process of capturing a digital image of checks.
bank item - Generally any negotiable instrument such as a check.
bank processing - Refers to general item processing within a banking institution.
bank repair - Bank “repair” in item processing refers to the process of amount re-entry and balancing.
bank research - Bank “research” in item processing refers to the method of data retrieval of digital check items.

Branch Capture - The process of capturing branch work to database. This method facilitates electronic transfer in minutes over former currier transfer.
Branch Capture System -A system that facilitates the capture of check items at an institution's individual branches. Thus allowing for real-time balancing, and posting of checks to accounts.
capture - To read or image physical items into an electronic form.
capture reject - An item or items that are generally sent to a “reject” pocket due to misread micr information.
CAR/LAR - Known as “courtesy amount recognition/legal amount recognition” A method of electronically reading a physical check or image of a check. This method reads the amounts based off of the "courtesy amount" or "legal amount" location on the item. This technology generally utilizes a form of grid matrix which checks for the presence of markings in given areas.
cash letters - A generic term used to refer to items in outgoing transit. It should be noted that one institutions cash letter can be another institution’s inclearings.

Check 21 - Short for Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act which allows for the voluntary usage of digital images as negotiable instruments.

encode - The adding the micr information to a check. In most cases this refers specifically to adding the amount.
endorse - The adding of a stamp to the back of a check which usually confirming process and order of the item’s processing.
endpoints - The utilization of a check sorting system during the item processing process which separates checks into pockets for special handling with an institution that is a member of a local clearing house.
Federal Reserve - The national institution which handles the management of monetary systems in the United States.
Federal Reserve Image Archive System - A method of image archiving that is compliant with Federal specifications.
foreign items - In some institutions this is an item that is from out of country. However in item processing in general it refers to items not on the current bank at which the item resides. For clarification many institutions have began using the term “transit” items.

POD - Proof of Deposit
Proof of Deposit (POD)- A banking procedure, sometimes referred to as an "item-by-item" policy, by which most banks assign availability to a check based on the time of deposit and contingent endpoints.
Power Encode - The method of encoding used in digital imaging systems whereby items are encoded based of micr reads matched with image database information.
